The Maltipoo is a modern cross between the Maltese and a Toy or Miniature Poodle. There is no single documented breeder responsible for creating the cross, and Maltese-Poodle mixes likely occurred before the Maltipoo name became widely used. Intentional breeding became increasingly common during the late 20th and early 21st centuries as demand grew for small companion dogs with Poodle ancestry. The Maltese contributes a history stretching back centuries as a small household companion, while the Poodle contributes intelligence, trainability, and a curly coat that often sheds relatively little. Maltipoos are bred almost entirely for companionship rather than for a working purpose. Because they are not a standardized breed, individual dogs can inherit very different combinations of traits. Some have straighter, silkier coats resembling the Maltese, while others develop loose waves or tighter Poodle-like curls. Adult size also depends heavily on the size and ancestry of the Poodle parent. Maltipoos are often marketed as hypoallergenic, but no dog can be guaranteed not to trigger allergies, and shedding varies between individuals. Major traditional kennel clubs do not recognize the Maltipoo as a distinct breed. Its popularity instead reflects the modern demand for small, social Poodle crosses intended primarily for household life.
