The Goldendoodle is a modern cross between the Golden Retriever and Poodle. Occasional crosses undoubtedly occurred earlier, but intentional breeding became increasingly visible during the 1990s as interest in Poodle crosses expanded internationally. Breeders hoped to combine the Golden Retriever's sociable, trainable temperament with characteristics associated with the Poodle, particularly intelligence and a coat that may shed less than a typical retriever coat. Goldendoodles quickly became popular family companions and have also been bred for therapy and assistance work. Unlike the Golden Retriever or Poodle, however, the Goldendoodle is not a standardized breed recognized by major traditional kennel clubs. First-generation dogs can inherit very different combinations of traits from their parents, and later generations add further variation. Coat texture can range from relatively straight to wavy or tightly curled, and shedding levels are not completely predictable. Size also varies dramatically because Standard, Miniature, or occasionally Toy Poodles may appear in different breeding programs. The Goldendoodle's rapid rise helped establish the "-doodle" naming pattern now used for numerous Poodle crosses. Its history is therefore less about a centuries-old working purpose and more about the modern demand for social companion dogs combining characteristics of two already popular breeds.
